The name Miss s'l le nieuce is taken from the phonetic pronunciation of Miscellaneous found in a French English dictionary. We chose the name because when we opened as a business we sold many varied and different products as a gift shop and it is forever changing, we added the cafe tea room in 2004. The name certainly puzzles some folk but once explained they like it.
The building we are in was built in the 1640's, it has a Grade 2 listing and is located in the Holmfirth Conservation area. This weavers cottage has many quirks with its uneven floors and bowing walls. It is believed that the building is mentioned in the reports of Holmfirth floods of 1852, when a local reservoir burst and flooded the Holme Valley, the occupant 0f no 27 made his escape from the workshop below up into the dwelling and escaping certain death onto New Fold.
The cottage survived the 1944 flood which was not reported in newspapers as during the war reporting restrictions were in place. The height the water reached can be seen on a plaque on the wall of the Elephant and Castle pub at the to of Hollowgate. Three people lost their lives that day. The horrific day in 1852, where the flood took the lives of eighty one people.
The events of the floods can be seen in the pictures below.
The above picture shows the cafe building, the house with the piano outside is the cafe.
